The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides financial assistance to countries facing economic difficulties. These loans help governments stabilize their economies, but they must eventually be repaid.
According to the latest IMF figures, Argentina has the largest outstanding IMF loan, followed by Ukraine, Pakistan, Ecuador and Egypt.
Here are the 20 countries with the highest outstanding IMF loans:
Argentina
Ukraine
Pakistan
Ecuador
Egypt
Côte d’Ivoire
Bangladesh
Kenya
Ghana
Democratic Republic of Congo
Angola
Sri Lanka
Costa Rica
Ethiopia
Jordan
Tanzania
Zambia
Cameroon
Sudan
Papua New GuineaWhat is particularly interesting is that several African countries appear on the list, including Kenya, Ghana, DR Congo, Angola, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia and Cameroon.
Malawi also has an outstanding IMF loan, but it is not among the 20 countries with the largest IMF debts. As of June 30, 2026, Malawi’s outstanding IMF credit was approximately SDR 250 million.
These figures show how important the IMF is in helping countries deal with economic challenges. However, large debts can also create pressure on governments if they struggle to grow their economies and generate enough revenue to repay their loans.
